KRONBORG CHESS OPEN 2026

INTERNATIONAL CHESS TOURNAMENT

The Kronborg Chess Open is an international chess tournament featuring a prize pool of over DKK 50,000 (€6,700), with the exact amount depending on the number of participants. In 2025, the prize fund reached DKK 59,000 (€7,900).
 
From 2022 to 2025, the tournament has been Denmark’s largest international chess event, attracting players from across the globe. We’ve welcomed participants from Norway, Sweden, China, Singapore, the Netherlands, Germany, Greece, Lithuania, Latvia, France, Ukraine, Italy, the Faroe Islands, Indonesia, India—and of course, Denmark.
We look forward to bringing together players of all nationalities and skill levels once again for this year’s tournament

ROUND ROBIN CHESS TOURNAMENT
The open tournament is divided into groups of 8 players playing Round Robin, while the GM and IM groups consist of 10 players each also playing Round Robin. 
Open groups placement is based on the Danish national rating the GM & IM groups based on FIDE rating. If you have a FIDE/ELO rating, it will be converted to the equivalent Danish rating.
Each player has 90 minutes for the entire game, plus a 30-second increment per move. Please note that no additional time is added after move 40.
The lowest-rated group may be played as a Monrad system, depending on the number of participants

PLAYING VENUE

There is an opportunity for accommodation at Comwell at a special rate in connection with the tournament. 
 
RATE OF PLAY
90 minutes per player for the whole game plus 30 seconds increment for every move played starting from the first move.
Note: You are allowed to be up to 1 hour late for your game. Further delay means that you lose your game.
 
OPEN TOURNAMENT
7 rounds Round Robin in Groups of 8 | The lowest ranking group is played as Monrad system if there are more than 8 players.
The winner of the top group is awarded the title Kronborg Master. Placing are determined by 1. mutual confrontation / 2. Winnings / 3. Sonneborn-Berger correction if the score is tied.
 
GM & IM GROUPS
Plays 9 rounds Round Robin in Groups of 10 from May 13th,-17th, 2026.
The winner of the top GM group is awarded the title Kronborg Master. Placing are determined by 1. mutual confrontation / 2. Winnings / 3. Sonneborn-Berger correction if the score is tied.

The above prizes are at a participant number of min. 96. There may be adjustments in prizes depending on the participant numbers and rating level.
